The Reviews Are IN!

A big thanks to everyone who took the time to review Counting Souls online. Here’s what some of the readers had to say:

Great story! Well written with lots of plot twists and gripping conclusion

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It’s the story of a man and his family living in the mountains of western North Carolina in the 1830’s. The author cleverly creates a story about the difficult and dangerous collecting the census on the frontier, while exposing the evils of slavery and the treatment of the Cherokee before the Trail of Tears. You can tell the author has done a lot of research, but the prose reads almost like a poem in places. I highly recommend reading this book.

I loved this story so much. Quickly in, the characters came to life and I became immersed. When I learned Counting Souls was this authors first book I was so surprised. Hoping for more from this Don Buchanan.

A story for the ages

Thank you to Donald Buchanan for writing this novel. Counting Souls took me on a lovely journey. It is a story with a heart and soul of it’s very own. This is one for the ages and the characters will stay with me and remind me of what is right and wrong. I am in awe.

An engrossing story

An engrossing story that captured my interest from the first chapter. The characters were real and I felt their physical and emotional struggles.

Great, engaging read! Deep characters!

I greatly enjoyed reading this book, with its fantastic character development and engaging story lines. A wonderfully detailed imagining of what people from different walks of life would have experienced and the thoughts and feelings they likely wrestled with during that time in our country’s history. Highly recommend this novel!

A book written in a highly charged atmosphere with a compassionate story.

I liked the relationship between two cultures that were 180 degrees apart but how the characters accepted and worked to survive.
